Generation Isolation is based on responses from 5,035 young people in England aged 11-18, conducted in partnership with YouGov.

OnSide wanted to shine a spotlight on the social lives of young people by learning more about the 85% of time they spend outside of school – so that they, and organisations that support and care about young people, can advocate for support that better meets their needs.

The research shows that although young people are living lives increasingly dominated by digital interaction, they crave in real life interaction.

Although (39%) of young people have turned to AI chatbots for advice, company or support – only 6% trust AI more than a real person. And while 53% of young people say social media and technology makes their friendships easier, nearly half (49%) say spending time together in person makes them feel more connected to their friends.

When asked what one thing would improve their lives outside school young people’s message was clear – more affordable leisure activities and safe, fun places to socialise and in-person social events and activities.
