Addressing Men’s Violence Against Women and Girls: Evidence and Ideas for Communicating with Men

Zero Tolerance, in partnership with White Ribbon Scotland and Equally Ours, has published a new report exploring evidence and practical approaches to encourage men’s involvement in preventing violence against women and girls. The resource is designed to support those working in community prevention, campaigning with men as an audience, or engaging on issues of masculinity.

Addressing men’s violence against women and girls: evidence and ideas for communicating with men summarises foundational research on this topic. It gives evidence on how best to talk to Scottish men aged 16 – 45 who believe in gender equality but don’t often think about or take action on it.

Zero Tolerance, White Ribbon Scotland and Equally Ours successfully developed messaging that leads these men to better understand:

  • The link between gender inequality and men’s violence against women and girls.
  • That gender equality benefits everyone –and support it.
  • Their role in men’s ending violence against women and girls.

This work will be most useful for those doing community prevention work, running campaigns that include men as an audience, and working with men on masculinity.

The aims of this project are ambitious. Achieving wide scale narrative change takes time and repetition.

A toolkit will be published to support actioning these findings – sign up to the new newsletter, and be the first to receive a copy.
