Ben Macpherson MSP has stepped down as Scotland’s Minister for Innovation, Technology and Tertiary Education, with YouthLink Scotland paying tribute to his commitment to and support for the youth work sector.
Mr Macpherson tendered his resignation to First Minister John Swinney, saying he had reflected deeply on his position and wanted to give greater priority to his mental and physical wellbeing, as well as having more time to serve his Edinburgh North Eastern and Leith constituency.
In accepting his resignation, the First Minister praised Mr Macpherson’s contribution across a range of government portfolios and highlighted his work during his most recent ministerial role.
Mr Swinney specifically recognised Mr Macpherson’s contribution to youth work, saying that during his time in post he had given a “fresh impetus to our support for youth work”, alongside progress on apprenticeships and strategic skills planning.
Commenting Tim Frew, CEO of YouthLink Scotland, said:
“On behalf of YouthLink Scotland, I want to acknowledge Ben’s contribution to youth work during his time in government and, in particular, the genuine commitment he showed to understanding and championing our sector.
“From the outset, Ben made a real effort to listen. He engaged openly with YouthLink Scotland, with youth work organisations and practitioners, and importantly with young people themselves. He understood that youth work is not an optional extra, but an essential part of how Scotland supports young people to thrive – contributing to learning, mental health and wellbeing, prevention, inclusion and stronger communities.
“While we are sorry to see him leave the ministerial role, we fully respect his decision and wish him well as he gives greater priority to his own wellbeing and continues his work as an MSP.
“We will continue to make the case strongly for youth work and look forward to building a positive relationship with the Minister who takes on responsibility for the portfolio.”
Mr Macpherson will continue to serve as MSP for Edinburgh North Eastern and Leith. The Scottish Government has said changes to the ministerial team will be announced in due course.
