The Career Review has outlined an ambitious redesign of the career ecosystem in Scotland, based on deep co-design with hundreds of practitioners, partners and people entitled to services.

Tim Frew, CEO, YouthLink Scotland says:

“The publication of the Careers Review report marks an exciting point in our collective journey towards realising a careers ecosystem that provides the support and opportunities young people need to reach their full potential.  We must press on to ensure that young people experience a rights-based careers service, designed to meet their individual needs.

It has been a privilege to work as part of the Programme Board, expertly chaired by Graham Smith, and take part in a genuinely collaborative approach to the redesign of careers services, including a fulsome programme of engagement and co-design with diverse voices.

Youth work plays an integral role in the careers ecosystem, and across the wider education and skills landscape. Youth workers offer essential support to many young people who are furthest from the labour market and often provide successful pathways into work through volunteering, employability and other community-based services.

YouthLink Scotland will continue to amplify the voice of young people within the eco-system and support youth work’s role in delivering the collaborative and collective commitments we have all made to young people through the publication of today’s report, recognising the value the role and contribution of all practitioners, across settings, who are part of the eco-system.”

The final report describes how this redesign will be delivered to ensure people can access the skills and experiences to grow and succeed in a rapidly changing world. These include:

Implementation plans developed by different ‘sectors’ of the career ecosystem, including education, colleges, universities, Developing the Young Workforce, Skills Development Scotland, youth work services and local authority employability

The Career Development Model which will underpin the delivery of future services, enabling individuals to more easily access experiences that meet their needs

An outline approach to experiential career learning across different stages of education, designed to give learners the skills, agency and confidence to make decisions that are right for them

Further details of the Career Services Collaborative through which those with an interest, direct or indirect, can work together to deliver the career services of the future.
