What began as a volunteer role after her retirement has evolved into an incredibly successful leadership position within one of the largest and most active Girls’ Brigade companies in the region.

Helen Turner –  YMCA

Helen Turner has dedicated 45 years to youth work, leaving a remarkable impact on the young people and communities she has served. Starting as a volunteer in 1976, she quickly became a central figure in youth work across Dumfries & Galloway. Her career culminated in her role as Chair of Dumfries YMCA, where she played a vital role in ensuring that the YMCA continued to be a space where young people could be supported and have fun.

Helen’s work has shaped youth services in multiple areas. As a community education worker, she developed youth programmes that became crucial to the fabric of Dumfries, Stranraer, and Gatehouse of Fleet. Her efforts helped solidify the YMCAs in these communities as important hubs for young people to come together, learn, and build skills. Through her role with the Holywood Trust, she expanded regional youth work training, connecting local youth organisations and providing much-needed support for both leaders and young people.

Helen’s impact is not just in the organisations she worked with, but also in the people she mentored. Many of the current youth workers in Dumfries & Galloway look to Helen as an influential figure in their own careers, benefiting from her guidance and experience. Her commitment to creating sustainable youth work opportunities, securing funding, and nurturing professional development for others has shaped the sector for decades.

One of Helen’s most defining achievements was her role in saving Dumfries YMCA from closure. Facing a serious financial crisis, Helen’s leadership and hands-on involvement ensured the YMCA could continue to serve the community. Through her determination, the YMCA not only survived but has continued to grow and expand its services, offering young people a safe, supportive environment to connect, develop, and find their way forward.

Helen has always believed in the potential of young people and this belief has guided her approach to youth work throughout her career. She’s mentored and supported many youth workers, helping them to grow both professionally and personally. Her influence can still be seen today, as many of the youth workers she mentored are now in leadership roles, passing on the knowledge and lessons they learned from her to the next generation of youth leaders.

Helen’s legacy in Dumfries & Galloway and beyond is immeasurable. She has touched countless lives, providing the guidance, support, and encouragement that has allowed many young people to thrive. Her dedication and passion for youth work continue to inspire those who knew her and the many she mentored over the years.
