Meet the finalists: Youth Worker of the Year

Finalists in the Youth Worker of the Year category for the National Youth Work Awards

Ryan Duffy – East Ayrshire Carers Centre

Ryan Duffy, from East Ayrshire Carers Centre, is a finalist for his exceptional work supporting young carers. Managing a service that reaches over 300 young carers each week, Ryan ensures they have a safe space to form friendships, enjoy respite, and, most importantly, experience a childhood outside of their caring responsibilities.

Through his work, Ryan identified a gap in mental health services for young carers and took action by undertaking a Diploma in Youth Counselling. This enabled him to offer a one-to-one talking service that has been hugely impactful for many. He has also played a key role in advocating for young carers at a local level, developing strong partnerships with schools, local authorities, and national organisations like Children in Need.

Ryan’s commitment extends beyond weekly support, as he created opportunities for young carers to experience once-in-a-lifetime activities, such as leadership programmes with Columba 1400, and has secured significant donations for the Young Carers Gift Appeal. Ryan is not just a youth worker; he’s a role model, a safe haven, and a voice for young carers in East Ayrshire. His work is transforming the lives of those who need it most.

Caroline Crozier – The Junction

For over 20 years, Caroline Crozier has been making a huge impact in the lives of young people in Edinburgh, particularly those affected by poverty, trauma, and substance use. Caroline has worked to support young people, providing both group work and one-on-one support in some of the city’s most deprived communities. She’s known for her dedication, compassion, and her ability to meet young people where they’re at, helping them navigate the most challenging times of their lives.

From providing emergency support to ensure young people have what they need in their most desperate moments, to leading a highly successful harm-reduction programme that’s supported countless young people in making healthier decisions, Caroline’s impact speaks volumes. Her unique ability to make young people feel heard and respected has earned her the trust of those who need it most.

One of Caroline’s most notable achievements is her work in creating a new drug-awareness programme which has been rolled out across schools in Edinburgh. This programme gives young people the knowledge they need to make informed choices, helping them escape the cycle of harm.

Caroline’s approach is rooted in respect for young people’s own experiences, making them active participants in their journey of change. It’s no wonder so many credit Caroline with saving their lives. Her work goes beyond just providing support, it’s about helping young people find hope, build their self-worth, and become the person they aspire to be.
