New LGBTIQ+ Inclusive Youth Work Resources and Training

Leap Sports Scotland has produced some resources and online training for LGBTIQ+ inclusive youth work as part of an Erasmus+ project called Rainbow Youth 2.0 with colleagues from Spain, Italy, and Slovakia.

A Competence Framework for youth workers determining their competences with working with LGBTIQ+ young people. This has five different competences, all including attitude, knowledge, skill, and behaviour dimensions, and indicators for having that competence. The competences are:

• Essential foundations of working with LGBTIQ+ young people.
• Creating and maintaining an LGBTIQ+ inclusive environment in individual and group learning activities.
• Collaborating and communicating successfully with important stakeholders who are close to LGBTIQ+ participants.
• Designing youth programmes in an LGBTIQ+ inclusive way.
• Identifying when further support is needed and how to react.

An eLearning Platform, called the Rainbow Youth Academy, which has interactive learning modules for youth workers and educators to learn the essential knowledge and skills to work effectively with LGBTIQ+ young people. The platform includes five free courses, available to anyone with an internet connection. The courses are:

• SOGIESC terminology and key concepts.
• LGBTIQ+ identities, issues, and challenges.
• Supporting LGBTIQ+ young people.
• Intersectionality, power, and privilege basics.
• LGBTIQ+ rights in focus

A Manual for LGBTIQ+ Inclusive Youth Work for anyone to learn from and refer to when working with LGBTIQ+ young people. It includes key information youth workers need in order to make their activities LGBTIQ+ inclusive and know what to do when working with LGBTIQ+ young people. The manual’s main chapters are:

• Key theories.
• Best practice.
• Supporting and safeguarding LGBTIQ+ young people.
• Addressing LGBTI-phobia in youth work.
• Inclusive language.
• LGBTIQ+ rights.
• Case studies.
• Non-formal activities.
