The Eric Liddell 100

A programme of events and activities to recognise and celebrate the life, sporting and community service achievements of one of Scotland’s iconic figures. It is being planned around 2024, the centenary of Eric Liddell’s historic success at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris.

Eric Liddell was a Scottish sporting legend, whose inspiring story was depicted in the 1981 Oscar-winning film Chariots of Fire. He played rugby for Scotland and competed at an international level in athletics. Born in China, Eric lived there for much of his life, where he is remembered and celebrated as a teacher and as an individual who put the needs of others before his own.

To help keep Eric’s legacy alive and to bring Eric’s inspirational story to a new generation, an online Educational Resource will be launched in January 2024. The resource will include a wealth of materials that can be used by schools, youth organisations and community groups, based on the key values demonstrated by Eric Liddell: passion, compassion and integrity.

Schools, youth and community sports organisations will also be encouraged to host Eric Liddell inspired sports days and events.
