Examples include libraries, community centres, parks, cafés, museums, leisure facilities, faith groups and other community spaces where people meet, socialise, learn, volunteer, or take part in activities. Inclusion Scotland wants to hear from disabled people about their experiences of “third spaces.”
Third spaces are places that are separate from the home (first space) and workplaces or education settings (second space). Examples include libraries, community centres, parks, cafés, museums, leisure facilities, faith groups and other community spaces where people meet, socialise, learn, volunteer, or take part in activities. They do not include businesses, such as pubs, restaurants, or theatres, but may include groups or clubs held on such premises where no or low cost of involvement is expected.
Third spaces can play an important role in improving health and wellbeing, reducing loneliness and social isolation, building social connections, and supporting independent living. They can provide opportunities for people to participate in their communities, develop skills, access support, and improve the overall quality of their life.
However, many disabled people face barriers to accessing and participating in third spaces. These barriers may include physical accessibility, transport, affordability, lack of support, inaccessible information, negative attitudes, and/or limited local provision, particularly in rural and island communities. Therefore, Inclusion Scotland is interested in understanding not only what barriers exist, but also what changes, support, and investment are needed to ensure third spaces are accessible, inclusive, affordable, and sustainable for everyone.
