Christina McKelvie MSP - A Tribute

Christina McKelvie MSP

Christina McKelvie MSP was a dedicated campaigner for equality and a strong advocate for social justice. Her passing is a real loss to Scottish politics and to the many people whose lives she touched through her work.

Kind, warm, compassionate, and full of life, these are just some of the words used to describe Christina by colleagues from across the political spectrum. She worked across party lines to create a fairer Scotland. Known for her sharp humour and quick wit, she brought warmth and energy to her work.

A strong believer in equality, she embodied the values of fairness and social justice. Her work on Clare’s Law, human trafficking legislation, and extending voting rights to 16-year-olds reflected her drive to create a more just society.

Her ministerial roles, first in Equalities and later in Culture, Europe, and International Development, allowed her to push forward policies she cared deeply about. More recently, as Minister for Drugs and Alcohol Policy, she brought her understanding and compassion to one of Scotland’s most pressing social issues.

Her partner Keith Brown wrote this morning: “She loved her party and was always a champion for the people of Scotland and an advocate for social justice and for Scotland to be an independent nation in Europe.”

She also had a deep understanding of the challenges young people in Scotland face and was a strong supporter of the youth work sector. As the national agency for youth work, we had the privilege of working with her on a range of issues, including her world first, Social Isolation and Loneliness Strategy. She consistently engaged with young people and valued the role of youth work.

Today, as flags fly at half-mast outside the Scottish Parliament and tributes are paid across the political spectrum, we remember her commitment, passion, and the contributions she made to Scotland.

She will be missed, but her work and legacy will endure in the causes she championed and the impact she had on so many lives.
