No Knives, Better Lives are conducting research on young peoples’ perceptions of violence and garner their views on how to prevent violence. To help us better understand young people’s views we have a survey for all young people aged 11-25 years to complete. The survey is open until 7th November.
In line with our research ethics, we have two approaches to distributing this survey that we need your help with.
11-15 years – please share the information leaflet below with the young people and their parents/guardians, to give them the opportunity to opt out of taking part, before sending them the link to the survey. We are asking that you provide support to the young people whilst they complete the survey, by sharing the link at the start of one of your sessions and being around whilst they complete it. You could even use this as an opportunity to run a session on the topic and start a discussion with the young people.
If any of the 11-15 yr olds or their parents/guardians opt out of taking part, and you are doing this as part of a session, please provide a different activity for these young people to complete.
16 years plus – please share the survey link with them and feel free to send the information leaflet below to provide some more information.
The survey asks questions about things like perceptions of safety and knife crime, campaigns to reduce knife crime, social media and violent content online. It should take 10-15 minutes to complete.
Taking part in the survey is entirely voluntary, and they can skip any questions they do not want to answer. We will not identify any individuals in the reporting of the findings, and all data will be managed in line with data protection legislation.
If, for any reasons, the young people become upset by any of the questions, they can speak to their parents or carers or someone else they trust. They will also be signposted to a range of other support organisations at the end of the survey where they can find details about how they can access support and report crimes anonymously.
While we have tried to provide information that is accessible to all young people, including the youngest age group, we are aware that some young people may find it difficult to read and understand what is being asked of them. Some may also be unable to complete the survey – this could be for a number of reasons, including disabilities and/or a lack of access to a suitable device or internet connection. If you think that any of the young people you work with require assistance with taking part in the survey, we kindly ask you to provide this, to the extent that you are able. Please contact Amy with any questions.
If you have any questions about the research, please contact our Senior Development Officer at No Knives Better Lives, Vicki Ridley vridley@youthlink.scot.
See below for an email that you can use when forwarding the email to the young people you work with. Please feel free to amend this to suit the young people you work with.
The survey will only be open for completion until 7th November, so we would be grateful if you could share the link as soon as possible.
A chance to tell us what you think!
The national campaign No Knives, Better Lives are asking young people in Scotland aged 11-25 to help them understand more about your experiences and views on violence and what you think is the best way to try to reduce violence in Scotland for young people. Can you help?
They would like you to complete a short web survey. The questions are about you, perceptions of safety and knife crime, campaigns to reduce knife crime, social media and violent content online. You don’t have to take part if you don’t want to, and if there are any questions you’d rather not answer, that’s fine. No-one will be able to identify you from the answers you give. More information is in the leaflet attached or you can find out more about this research here.
