In Scotland, 54% of 18-39 year-olds are now living beyond their means (spending at least 20% more than their incomes); half of young people in Scotland are regularly struggling to make ends meet – and that has long-term consequences according to data published recently in Smart Data Foundry’s monthly Economic Wellbeing Explorer.

Academic Pressure Linked to Increased Risk of Depression in Teens
Pressure to achieve at school at age 15 is linked to depressive symptoms and risk of self-harm, and the association appears to persist into adulthood, finds a study led by UCL researchers. The authors of the new study, published in The Lancet Child & Adolescent Health, say their findings suggest that reducing academic pressure in schools could reduce depression and self-harm among young people.

Substance Use on the Rise Among Gen Z in Their Early 20s
Around seven in ten young adults who are part of generation Z report binge drinking in the past year, with almost a third regularly consuming six or more alcoholic drinks in one sitting, according to new UCL research. The report also finds that half of gen Z’s 23-year-olds have used cannabis and a third have tried harder drugs, such as cocaine, ketamine and ecstasy.

New Research Suggests Older People Have More Progressive Views on Women’s Rights Than Younger Generations
The 29-country survey, conducted by Ipsos and King’s College London, finds that young men today are more likely than those in older generations to hold traditional views about gender roles.
